Industrial Design Fan Art

Description

After fixating on random button panels during walks around Portland, I began thinking of ways I might explore my current obsession with certain industrial fixtures. In the end, I decided to create a simple piece of fan art in tribute to a favorite keypad.

Concept

Fan-made art is a common fixture across many media, but it isn’t something I’ve often encountered in the realm of industrial design. But why not show appreciation for things beyond the world of entertainment with an original work of art?

Process

Beginning with a reference image, I built simple base geometry in Maya LT and did a vector design of the interface in Adobe Illustrator. With these assets, I moved into Substance Painter and created the textures using the vector images as both color sources and masks.
